Review: The Abyss (1989)

The Abyss (1989)

Directed by: James Cameron | 146 minutes | action, drama, adventure, science fiction, thriller | Actors: Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michael Biehn, Leo Burmester, Todd Graff, John Bedford Lloyd, JC Quinn

The first teaser of this film contained no more information than From writer and director James Cameron. Without showing footage of the film, mentioning actors or explaining a story, the film was promoted by saying that a James Cameron movie has to be good. Of course expectations are very high from the man behind ‘Terminator’ and ‘Aliens’, but there are many more reasons why this film should not be missed. Some of these are discussed in this review, ‘The Abyss’ is a real must-see.

The entire story takes place deep below the sea surface, a completely different world. The underwater images are visual masterpieces, a documentary on ‘Discovery Channel’ is nearby, but the design of the oil rig is also impressive. There is a lot of attention to detail and the special effects will not make you believe that this film has been around since 1989.

Cameron’s creativity not only results in a feast for the eyes, the story is also original and gripping. We move from possible Russian attacks via nuclear warheads and crazy Marines to the magical unthinkable that takes place in the depths of the sea where no man has gone before. Without any problems, the tension is maintained so that the 146 minutes seem to fly by. The DVD also offers the viewer the Special Edition Version, which is twenty-eight minutes longer, which mainly provides extra environmental images.

The cast includes Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn. Harris is always a good addition to a movie and the hate/hate relationship with Mary Elizabeth delivers romance and humor. I hate that woman, You probably shouldn’t have married her then, huh?

This top film is still half a star away from a maximum score. At the end of the film, a lesson had to be given to humanity, which gives the whole thing a pretty sweet American aftertaste. ‘The Abyss’ is an excellent and beautiful film with a strong story and impressive cast. A tip for anyone who wants to be carried away for an evening into the unknown of the sea.
