Review: Sunset from a Rooftop (2009)

Sunset from a Rooftop (2009)

Directed by: Marinus Groothof | 10 minutes | drama, short film | Actors: Sonja Kolacaric, Natasa Markovic, Bojan Dimitrijevic, Nikola Vujovic, Marko Bacovic

The story of ‘Sunset From a Rooftop’ is not surprising. But it zooms in for a moment on the daily life of young people in Belgrade, where ‘daily life’ has a different dimension. For a moment ‘Sunset From a Rooftop’ takes a look at the daily worries and then quickly returns to the order of the day, without ending with a particularly great climax.

Director Marinus Groothof describes the contrast between major social issues and important personal development in the lives of young people. Like the expectation of a child. Striking about ‘Sunset From a Rooftop’ is that these greats seem to flow into each other effortlessly. The filmmakers managed to convey this ambiguous atmosphere well.

The result is a short film with a peculiar character, in which very little happens on the one hand and a lot on the other. As if as a viewer, just like the main characters, you are already somewhat used to the extremes that manifest themselves in the lives of these young people. Marinus Groothof (1979) graduated in 2004 from the Netherlands Film and Television Academy. He is active as a screenwriter, director and producer. He also wrote the screenplay for this short film, which was included in the NPS Kort! 2009.
