Surprise hit ‘John Wick’ has caused a lot in Hollywood in addition to a whole load of sequels. The fight films in which Keanu Reeves plays the title role score like a charm, so the copycats are queuing up to flash the success formula. With varying degrees of success, as most clones don’t come close to the original. Reeves is a trained martial artist and does most of his stunts himself. Comedian Bob Odenkirk thought ‘I want that too’ and so it happened. Enter ‘Nobody’.
In ‘Nobody’ Odenkirk plays the title role. He is the ‘nobody’ who revolves around. This apparently dull bourgeoisie gets the (passive-aggressive) wrath of his family when he decides not to intervene during a robbery in which two nervous robbers take a few dollars. His son is angry with his father whom he considers a weakling. My wife is also unhappy with her husband’s pacifist attitude. Only his daughter is still faithful to him. However, when he discovers that the crooks stole his daughter’s favorite key ring, he vows revenge. Our burgher is not just some wimp, but a retired FBI executioner.
In ‘John Wick’ a dog was the reason for murder. In ‘Nobody’ that is a key ring. Not so strange, because ‘Nobody’ is from the same makers as the ‘John Wick’ franchise. That means that the stunts are also of the same level. Odenkirk has trained hard for this role and it shows! The actor is in shape. What makes this film so enjoyable is that our anti-hero looks rotten every scene. He really gets hit and hurts. The violence has an impact and he is not a one-man army. That makes the fights just a bit more exciting.
Besides a great Odenkirk, this film has more to offer. A smooth editing, for example, and a fantastic soundtrack. Old soul and eighties pop alternate and emphasize the already clumsy action a little better. ‘Nobody’ is ‘John Wick’ with humor. Recommended for every action fan!
