Review: Daddy’s Home 2 (2017)
Daddy’s Home 2 (2017)
Directed by: Sean Anders | 92 minutes | comedy | Actors: Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, John Lithgow, Mel Gibson, Linda Cardellini, Alessandra Ambrosio, Owen Vaccaro, Scarlett Estevez, Didi Costine, John Cena, Connor Wise, Daphne Wise, Dylan Wise, Andrea Anders
Will Ferrell is a comedian who has to rely on two tricks. The American curly-haired man specializes in playing stupid egoists (think ‘Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy’ and ‘The Campaign’) and in the portrayal of ultra-soft losers (‘The Other Guys’). There is no in-between. Ferrell knows where his strength lies and exploits it skillfully. In ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ he once again takes on the role of a very uncomfortable schlemiel. And once again he is both inimitably insufferable and hilarious.
‘Daddy’s Home 2’ revolves around stepfathers and their role within (compound) families. In the first part, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) were initially still about hope, but they eventually became friends. They have put their differences aside and help each other with co-parenting. All is peaceful until their fathers come to visit during the holidays and tensions run high. Dusty’s shaggy dad (Mel Gibson) and Brad’s feminin father (John Lithgow) clash.
If you’re interested in this sequel, you probably already know what to expect. The first part, but then squared. This sequel is more intense and contains a much higher joke density. With that term you have to think of cringe-inducing and downright embarrassing situations such as only Ferrell can play. This actor has no shame and ‘treats’ you to poignant jokes.
Lithgow keeps up with him and the chemistry between these actors works fine. Wahlberg offers a good counterbalance to the grotesque renditions of Ferrell and Lithgow. Gibson’s role isn’t very noteworthy, but it’s nice to see him in a movie again. His bad reputation has caused him a lot of damage. A shame, because this man is a strong and charismatic actor. Wrestling hero John Cena turns up in a cool supporting role.
‘Daddy’s Home 2’ is a movie for the Ferrell fan. The comedian is back on track and masters his character to perfection. This sequel is smoother than the first part and has many more (strong) jokes. Lovers of grown men who behave like children and make a big fool of themselves can have fun with this shameless comedy.
