Review: 1 Day in Barcelona (2006)

1 Day in Barcelona (2006)

Directed by: Douwe Dijkstra | 3 minutes | short film, documentary

Filmmaker Douwe Dijkstra, who graduated from the Art Academy CABK in Zwolle, in the field of illustration, worked in Barcelona on a series of animation films entitled ‘Backpacking’. He gives his audience a glimpse behind the scenes by showing his experiences – but in a strongly summarized form – in the three-minute 10-long film ‘1 day in Barcelona’. With this film Dijkstra won the 2005 Groene Olijf Prijs for Young Talent and he also won the Jury Prize of the Dutch Online Film Festival 2006. ‘1 Day in Barcelona’ shows Dijkstra from the beginning of the day until the next day, when the alarm clock in his mobile phone calls him back to the land of the living. We follow Douwe in short fragments in the bathroom, breakfast, walking through the streets of Barcelona, by metro, on his way to his studio, where he shows – very interestingly – how he works to make ‘Backpacking’. Supported by funny music and sound effects, ‘1 Day in Barcelona’ is a fun and well edited video, which especially gains in value when you have seen, or are going to see ‘Backpacking’.
