Synopsis: Maachis is a true story inspired by the Sikh riots. Kripaal (Chandrachur Singh) lives peacefully with his best friend Jaswant (Raj) and loves his sister, Veeran(Tabu). Everything is going nicely in his life till one day when Jaswant is wrongfully arrested by the police on charges of murdering a police officer. Jaswant is tortured. Kripaal seeks revenge. He joins an extremist group headed by a commander (Kulbhushan) and which also has members like Sanatan (Om Puri), Jaimal (Shergill) amongst others. How he seeks his revenge, forms the rest of the story. Maachis(Matchstick) is set against the blue star operation and the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Gulzar succeeds in exploring the mindset of the youths.
