As soon as the first tones of the well-known ‘Sex & the City’ theme sound, you as a viewer are immediately drawn back into that old familiar atmosphere. As if the ladies never left! Several years older, yes, but still the same. Looking for love, sex and, most importantly for women in New York: fashion. Ladies, hold on tight: Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha are back!
Four years after the last episode, a lot has changed in the girls’ lives. Carrie no longer writes columns but has written three successful books. She has grown up, has been able to save money and she has a serious relationship with Mr. Pig. Charlotte’s dream has also come true, she has adopted a cute Chinese girl with her husband Harry and is overjoyed. Miranda lives with her son Brady and Steve in Brooklyn. Even Samantha is settled with her boyfriend Smith in Los Angeles. Excuse me? Are we talking about the same Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha here? This does sound very boring. Fortunately, the film is anything but boring. As soon as the four friends get back together, the cozy get-togethers are as usual and it turns out that the girls’ relationships are not as stable as they seem.
Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Manolo Blahnik, Oscar de la Renta and Vivienne Westwood are also back. The stylists have once again been able to indulge themselves completely on the four protagonists and the real fashionistas will love this. Even though Carrie is four years older, she remains the queen of fashion. The bridal fashion in the film is especially beautiful, because yes, we get to see it in full in the film. You will have to see for yourself whether there will actually be a wedding, but dresses are in abundance. Vivienne Westwood in particular provides a Wow! moment in the film. You will get goosebumps after seeing this dress, even if you are so stoic about fashion, if you hate weddings and everything to do with it, you will melt when you see this dress.
Besides the fashion, there are more moments in the film where you fall in love with the whole atmosphere around ‘Sex and the City’. Even if you’ve never seen the series, you can’t possibly be insensitive to this movie. It is a gem of a romantic comedy. Everything is in it; fashion, music, romance, sex, girlfriends, humor. You name it. And everything is also completely over the top. The romantic scenes are really too romantic and exaggerated, the fashion is really too much of a good thing and the dramatic scenes are also greatly exaggerated, but that’s all part of Sex and the City and that’s why this movie is just too much fun. Even the men can still enjoy this film because there is also a lot to laugh about, especially the hysterical Charlotte provides the necessary moments of laughter. Especially when she forgets her fear of contamination for a moment and then just can’t make it to the toilet anymore… A new member of the Sex and the City family has even emerged. Jennifer Hudson plays Louise, Carrie’s personal assistant and with her borrowed designer bags and love for fashion, she certainly wouldn’t look out of place in the group of friends. Still a great honor to get a role in one of the biggest films of the year alongside the four girlfriends. Jennifer Hudson is doing well.
It’s quite a risk to turn a popular TV series into a movie. Michael Patrick King has nevertheless managed to transfer the entire atmosphere of the series to the silver screen so that fans can fully enjoy their trusted series again. This is partly due to the fact that all actors were willing to cooperate. With another mr. Big for example, the movie would be a lot less fun. Sex and the City fans didn’t have to wait so long for nothing, it was well worth the wait. But also for the people who were not a fan of the series, this film is very worthwhile. It’s the best romantic comedy of all time!
