The Honeymoon (2020)

Nora (Sallie Harmsen) is meeting a friend at a cafe. The two women have not seen each other for a while, but friend Yuka (Jip Smit) knows Nora’s situation. Full of compassion, she inquires about Nora’s life, but at the same time she tries to keep the conversation light. She offers Nora to spend the rest of the evening together, but Nora chooses to go home.

‘The honeymoon’ by Nico van den Brink (screenplay and direction) slowly reveals its secrets. It’s clear that Nora is going through a rough patch, because of something that happened a year ago, but what exactly is going on remains in the dark for a long time.

The atmosphere of the film is sad. It is thanks to Sallie Harmsen that you can sympathize with her without knowing what is wrong with it. Once in Nora’s house, the tension builds and ‘The Honeymoon’ takes on thriller-like features.

This short film, made as part of NPS Kort!, is so subtle that you will only fully understand after reading that the story is based on the short story The Departure by Selma Robinson (published in Harper’s Magazine in October 1932). what you actually saw. That can be frustrating for some people, other movie buffs just watch the movie again afterwards.
