Review: Super Gidget (2019)
Super Gidget (2019)
Directed by: Boris Jacq, Glenn McCoy | 4 minutes | short film, animation | Original voice cast: Jenny Slate, Patton Oswalt, Gilbert Gottfried, Bobby Moynihan, Jess Harnell, Mona Marshall
Gidget is the pygmy keeshond in love with protagonist Max from ‘Pet Secrets’ (‘The Secret Life of Pets’). Because their love is not yet mutual, the poor animal naturally has an inferiority complex and identity problems from here to Hollywood. ‘Super Gidget’ is a bonus movie that has been added to the home entertainment releases of ‘Pet Secrets 2’ (and reportedly will also hit theaters in December 2019 as a pre-cut to ‘Spy Secrets’ (‘Spies in Disguise’). can lead to such a feeling of inadequacy.
Gidget is a superheroine in ‘Super Gidget’. Max turns to her in his utter distress. He is kidnapped by a huge amount of squirrels. Gidget immediately flies into her superhero mode and does everything in her power to save her beloved. Max turns out to have been kidnapped by a scary-looking flea.
Due to the bizarre events in ‘Super Gidget’, the punch line to the story is already clear before the film has even started. That means that you actually watch the sequel of this short with much less interest than it deserves. The animation is decent, as we are used to from Illumination Entertainment, but the film is aimed so purely at younger viewers that there is not much left for adult viewers.
