Review: Ring of Dreams (2019)

Ring of Dreams (2019)

Directed by: Willem Baptist | 70 minutes | documentary

“A nightmare is also fake, but when you wake up bathed in sweat, does it feel that way too?”
While watching ‘Ring of Dreams’ you will often ask yourself what fantasy and reality actually are.
We follow a number of people à la Hulk Hogan who takes us into the wonderful world of show wrestlers. It is a total experience with costumes, music, a well thought out story and brilliant acting. Watching ‘Ring of Dreams’ is like watching a wrestling match. As fake as the villain and hero are in this story, so real are the injuries and drops of blood.

‘Ring of Dreams’ teaches you to look differently at concepts such as fake and real. Who determines what is essential? This film is seen as a documentary, but clearly has parts that are acted. Does this affect the film’s credibility? New! In fact, it is incredibly attractive to explore these boundaries as a maker, but also as a viewer. Just put us to work. Let us speculate about the characters we encounter.

The characters are strong, humorous and very believable. Take the leader of the pack, a boy with a kind of skull mask on his head. Will you ever see his face? No, you know that after 5 minutes. This is how the film immediately sets its tone; enjoy and don’t be too serious. It’s all pretty simple, you have the villain and the hero and they’re going to fight something. The dirtier the bad guy, the bigger the hero. That’s what we humans love to watch and what makes show wrestling so popular.

Watch ‘Ring of Dreams’ and open yourself up to discover the world of wrestling.
