My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
Directed by: PJ Hogan | 100 minutes | comedy, romance | Actors: Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett, Philip Bosco, M. Emmet Walsh, Rachel Griffiths, Carrie Preston, Susan Sullivan, Christopher Masterson
Director PJ Hogan continues the wedding after his well-received film ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ (1994). This time, however, he has opted for a film intended for the wider public, with which he has far outdone himself. With stars such as Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, he makes the film endearing to many fans.
‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ is a true romantic classic with a high humor content. Especially Rupert Everett (“Dellamorte Dellamore”), who plays Jules’ boss George, provides a good workout for our laughing muscles. With his jokes, singing and gay traits he knows how to conquer the hearts of many women, both inside and outside the film. But not only Everett provides the necessary laughter, Cameron Diaz also knows how to make the viewer laugh with her innocent and naive role, the rich and young Kimmie. Julia Roberts, who is not a comedienne by birth, shows that a role in a comedy is more than just humor. She is especially suitable for the romantic aspect in the story and, as we are used to from her, puts this down excellently. Beautiful smiles, twinkling eyes and high emotions are more in the vein of Roberts and these can be seen regularly in this film.
‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ is a story about two friends, Jules and Michael, who promised each other that they would get married if they didn’t start dating on their 28th birthday. When Jules learns just before her birthday that her best friend is getting married, all hell breaks loose. As a jealous girlfriend, she does everything she can to prevent the marriage. When all her own attempts at sabotage fail, she enlists the help of her boss George. As her boyfriend and ‘other half’, he is made part of Julianne’s latest desperate attempt. Will this latest attempt make her former boyfriend jealous? Will he fall for Jules’s charms? Or does he go for the young and sympathetic Kimmie?
A sweet story in which love and jealousy predominate. ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ is a romantic comedy that must be seen.
