Review: En route (2019)

En route (2019)

Directed by: Marit Weerheijm | 11 minutes | drama, short film | Actors: Inay Heijblom, Alex Dosljak, Mike Lebanon, Zouhair Mtazi, Nanette Boxman

In ‘KORT!’ film ‘En Route’ (2019) by Marit Weerheijm (screenplay and direction) we meet Inay and her younger brother Alex. They hang out on the couch and play with a flashlight. The atmosphere is friendly. Moments later, mom comes home, she probably just worked a night shift. Inay and Alex have to go out with Dad, who urges the kids to hurry up. But Inay thinks she’s smart. She whispers to her brother that he should be slow on purpose. “Do you remember the last time Dad was late? Then we all got tasty desserts!”

Because the viewer has no idea where daddy has to be on time and where those desserts come from, he joins Inay’s game for a long time. You gloat about her ingenious delay techniques, but at the same time you also see the agitation of the father. In an endearing scene we see him lovingly playing a counting game on public transport, while he is undoubtedly internally stressed because he missed the previous subway thanks to his daughter.

‘En Route’ is a beautiful and subtle short film, which cleverly takes the viewer along into the world of a child – in her innocence choosing exactly the most unwise choice possible – and the endless love and patience of a father.
